A poem for Kyoko

This poem was found between the lines of a book called Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It is a story about messages passed between two women on handkerchiefs and fans, in a language created in order to communicate in private, enabling them to sustain their friendship over a life time.

Her indigo cotton was my silk,
a protection for what was to come.
Still we kept walking.
Between us was a will to live.
The path rose steeply.
But we were like flowers in the hand,

I Have a Life, found within Still Life, by A. S. Byatt

I have a life.
Let's look

A circular magnifying glass
through the unseen eye
in a fine cocoon wrapping
you can see her.

There she was,
in her chamber
of two hands.

Look,
Ves, but
I don't see.

you must try.

Softly and companionably
there was a light
and a small sound
and someone put her hand up.
together they reached.

disorientations will reveal her own trail.
from the egg to the moment of death
he was there and walked with her
somehow the eye saw into one.

she did not say much.
she heard a voice shape the wind.

As if Seen through White, found within A. S. Byatt's Still Life

I know this is possible.
yes, it is.
Love was slow, easy
so beautiful.
I was overcome. I still am.
I-I couldn't understand,
but I knew you would.
That's all.
That's good.
I came back today because-
Because?
I couldn't bear not to.
May I?
Please do.
Life became more pleasurable
and more real.
He remembered in color,
but softly
as if seen through white.
