Thank you for your kind comment! I really appreciate it.

I wish you the very best in your efforts on behalf of the Arts Council. Wish I were closer to Dayton.

There's really only one word to describe the arts here in Yuma - pfft.

Profile Information

Location:
Dayton, Ohio
About Me:
My name is Lee and I represent the Riverbend Arts Council. The council is a non profit organization which is dedicated to the support and nurture of the Arts in the greater Dayton area. For 40 years we were affiliated with Riverbend Art Center, a wonderful facility that offered classes in many of the visual arts.

Riverbend Art Center was operated by the City of Dayton. Due to budget cuts in these pressing economic times, the City closed Riverbend. Our council is trying to find a way to reopen Riverbend or to find an alternative place to hold classes.

The warm and friendly atmosphere of Riverbend, the encouraging and caring instructors.........we do not want to give up on that. It was a positive environment
which encouraged hundreds of area residents to explore their creative side. Many of these went on to become prominent artists in their own right.

Why are we starting a site on Indiepublic? What better place to network with area artists and to meet new people, some of whom may be struggling to maintain their own supportive units than a site that is totally dedicated to promoting artists and their work? We hope to make many friends here at Indie.
We hope to get fresh ideas here.

I will be introducing our members and encouraging other board members to join this group. You will meet them also.. Here's to new friends!

Much discussion at our regular monthly meeting. We are resigned to the fact that the City does not want to rent the old RAC to our group so we can resume classes. We are in a conundrum because we were not meant to be an administrative group but a supportive group.

Our next step is to develop a business plan. We must have that in place if we are going to move forward. We must continue to educate ourselves and to try to draw in new memb… Continue

Help

The City of Dayton and the Riverbend Art Center Council have a long history of working
together to provide a place for individuals to express their artistic self. We understand the
current economic situation and the City's reasons for closing the center, we are reluctant
to let the Art Center remain closed. We believe that Riverbend is worth saving and would
love to continue to support this unique cultural center. We believe that the atmosphere and
culture of the Center as a whole has a unique p… Continue

Community Interest

It was gratifying to see how many people in the community are interested in seeing classes resume at Riverbend. Many people said that the old site was the perfect place because it is part of the cultural arts complex. Indeed it is the perfect place, BUT it is closed. We talked with many people this Saturday and Sunday and all want to keep abreast of any progress that we make toward finding a new site. Many expressed a reluctance to participate in classes if they were held at a downtown location.… Continue

Mayfair Plant Sale

We had a successful First Friday this week and enjoyed attention at the Mayfair Plant Sale at Wegerzen Gardens. Many people were interested in keeping track of our progress and want to take classes whenever we find a building. We got almost two pages of signatures and email of interested persons. People are talking about what a SHAME it is that the City decided to close Riverbend Art Center when apparently there are funds available to build a bike path through the city. People are wondering what… Continue
