Recently I try to make more custom order for client. For example, a pouch I set a basic style, and encourage customers to choose the fabrics they like. And then I would create the pouch base on their idea.
Do you think whether it would work, would people like this way to design things themself. Have you ever try to do this too? I am afraid people would not accept if they can't see thie real picture first....
I do custom orders all the time and haven't had any problems. It may be easier for me since my little doors are not stocked, but made when ordered -- partly because some people would like different colors or have other requests.
If you really want to "cover your butt", so to speak, you could email the customer a pic of the finished piece before it ships to make sure they like it. But if you do that, I'd insist on a "kill fee" where the customer agrees that this is a custom piece and may possibly not be to their liking -- the kill fee is a minimum amount they agree to pay for you to take the trouble to make the custom piece. If they don't like it, they pay the kill fee and everyone moves on.
My approach has always been "trust me"... I'm my own worst critic and if I'm not happy with a custom piece, I won't ship it -- and I let my customers requesting custom work know that.
